Brookdale Park
Rose garden, open fields, great variety, and easy parking
Why I love it: The variety. We can start with lush greenery, wander through the rose garden for some color, then finish in an open field for that dreamy, glowy light everyone wants. It is one of the most popular Montclair family photo locations because the rose garden, open fields, and wooded areas are so close together. There’s even an amazing playground for more pics or if the kiddos still have energy after the session. In my opinion this is one of the best places for family photos in Montclair NJ Brookdale Park
- Best light: Golden hour is absolutely gorgeous here. In summer, the tree lines create perfect backlight.
- Great for: Families with toddlers who need room to run around, maternity sessions, or just about any type of photo session you can think of.
- Parking: I usually prefer meeting near the playground parking lot as it has ample spaces and it’s just a perfect starting location. Multiple lots off Watchung Ave and Bellevue Ave are also available – no hunting for spots here!
Why Families Love It
Rose garden color, wide open fields for play, and an easy playground stop before or after photos. Parking is simple, so the whole experience feels low-stress.

Pro tip: Any season looks great here. The roses look incredible in June, the fall foliage is unreal, and even winter has tons of options for fun sessions (think building snowmen or sleigh riding photos). We can time any season perfectly.

Pro Tip: Fall colors around the pond are extra vibrant.
Edgemont Park
Why I love it: This is a smaller but classic option if you’re searching for family photo spots in Montclair NJ. Those pond reflections at sunset are magic. We also have some gorgeous trees for a backdrop.
- Best light: Late afternoon through golden hour.
- Great for: Quick sessions with young kids. It’s totally stroller-friendly.
- Parking: Street parking on Valley Rd and nearby streets.
Why Families Love It
Everything is close together – gazebo, pond, bridge, trees – so you get lots of variety without needing to walk far, which keeps sessions relaxed for little ones.
Van Vleck House & Gardens
Lush, timeless, and manicured
- Why I love it: Elegant landscaping with quiet corners that feel like a secret garden. Perfect for dressier looks or maternity photos.
- Best light: Soft morning light in spring, golden hour year-round.
- Great for: Families wanting that fine-art garden aesthetic.
- Permit notes: You’ll need advance reservation and there’s a site fee of $300 for professional sessions. Van Vleck Gardens
Why Families Love It
Manicured gardens, elegant landscaping, and quiet corners that feel like a secret.

Pro Tip: Weekday mornings are calmest during peak bloom.
Anderson Park
Open meadow vibes in Upper Montclair

Pro Tip: Sunset is dreamy here. Mornings are perfect for early risers.
Why Families Love It
Wide lawns for doing just about anything and simple backdrops that never distract from your family.
- Why I love it: Clean backgrounds, tall trees, and plenty of open grass for games, spinning, and piggyback rides.
- Best light: Sunset for those dreamy backlit family moments. Morning light works great for early risers too.
- Great for: Natural, movement-heavy sessions where kids can actually play.
- Parking: Street parking along North Mountain Ave and Bellevue Ave.
Downtown Montclair/Church Street
Urban energy with café charm
- Why I love it: Colorful storefronts, string lights, and that classic Montclair vibe. We can mix lifestyle shots (maybe grabbing a quick bite at any of the amazing cafes) with some polished portraits.
- Best light: Weekday mornings or just before sunset when foot traffic dies down.
- Great for: Families wanting that modern, city-meets-suburb vibe.
- Parking: Garages and metered street parking nearby.
- Permit notes: We’re fine on public sidewalks since I work with a small setup. If we want to shoot inside any businesses, we’ll need permission first.
Pro Tip: Weekday mornings or just before sunset are best – less foot traffic, easier parking, and cafés are quieter for those lifestyle shots.
Why Families Love It
Colorful storefronts, string lights, and the cozy café vibe. It feels like “real Montclair” and gives both polished portraits and fun lifestyle moments.

Mills Reservation
Woodsy trails and ridge overlook
- Why I love it: Forest paths for exploring plus a dramatic ridge with distant skyline views. Perfect for adventurous families.
- Best light: Golden hour up on the ridge, morning light on the tree-covered trails.
- Great for: Families with school-aged kids who are up for a mini-hike.
- Parking: Trailhead lots with short walks to the good photo spots.
Pro Tip: Bring comfy shoes – the trails are easy, but we’ll want to wander a bit to find the best light and views. The ridge at golden hour is worth it.
Why Families Love It
It’s a mini-adventure: shady trails for exploring plus a big payoff with skyline views. Kids love the sense of discovery, parents love the variety of backdrops.
Kip’s Castle Park (Montclair/Verona)
A touch of storybook magic
- Why I love it: The castle architecture and manicured lawns add instant wow factor. We can grab some portraits here, then head to a park for candid playtime shots. Kip’s Castle Park
- Best light: Sunset around the grounds.
- Parking: On-site parking available.
Pro Tip: The castle looks best in the evening when the stone glows warm against the sunset sky. Arrive a little early so kids can explore the lawns before portraits.
Why Families Love It
It feels magical – castle architecture, sweeping lawns, and a storybook setting that’s unique to this part of New Jersey. Perfect for whimsical family photos.
In-Home Sessions
Cozy, relaxed, and authentic
- Why I love it: Home sessions let kids be themselves. Favorite toys, books, and pets are right there, so photos feel natural instead of posed.
- Best light: Late morning or early afternoon near big windows usually works best. I’ll help you pick the rooms with the nicest light.
- Great for: Newborn sessions, winter months, rainy days, or any family that wants a low-stress experience without leaving the house.
- Bonus: No need to pack snacks, outfits, or gear — everything you need is already at home.
Pro Tip: Declutter just one or two spots — like the living room sofa or a favorite chair by the window. You don’t need a picture-perfect house, just good light and moments.
Why Families Love It
Every detail feels personal. Kids are comfortable, parents feel less rushed, and the photos capture your family’s everyday story in the place you know best.

How to choose the best Montclair location for your family
For toddlers
Any of the parks work well – Brookdale, Anderson, Edgemont, or Van Vleck – since they all have open lawns and space to play. The only spot I usually skip with toddlers is Downtown Montclair, since it’s busier and less open, but it can still work.
For dressier looks
Van Vleck has elegant, manicured gardens, and Downtown Montclair has a more polished, urban energy. Both work beautifully for families who want a slightly elevated or formal feel.
For teens
Downtown Montclair and Church Street bring energy, color, and variety all within a small area – perfect for teens who like a little edge in their photos.
For nature lovers
Mills Reservation offers woodsy trails and a ridge overlook, while Brookdale also has wooded areas in addition to its open lawns and rose garden. Both give you that natural, adventurous feel.
For grandparents or strollers
All of these parks are fairly accessible, with paved paths and easy parking. Edgemont’s loop is especially stroller-friendly, but Brookdale, Anderson, and Van Vleck are also comfortable options.
Want both candid and classic
Pair a park with a quick café or Church Street stop. We can capture polished portraits first, then grab some lifestyle shots over coffee or a snack.
FAQ for Montclair family photos
Most parks don’t require permits for how I do family sessions (I don’t use any tripods or invasive lighting). Van Vleck needs an advance reservation and a $300 site fee. If we decide to use a local business as a backdrop we’ll have to reach out prior to the session.
Golden hour gives soft, flattering light. Morning sessions are perfect for early risers and tend to be calmer in popular locations.
I keep an eye on the forecast and have backups ready. We can pivot to tree cover, use Downtown Montclair’s covered areas, or reschedule with minimal stress.
About one hour (give or take). That gives us time to warm up, play, and capture a mix of candid and classic portraits. We also offer day in the life options where I tag along with your family the whole day!
